Meta: A new journey to metaverse

A few days before Facebook announced that it has changed its company name to Meta. To announce this, they arranged a conference over Facebook Connect which is an augmented and virtual reality platform. Zuckerberg has mentioned that the new name will also reflect the company’s upcoming endeavor to enlarge the company beyond just a social media company. The process of re-branding accelerated because the social media giant faced a barrage of news reports for the past few months as Frances Haugen, a former employee turned whistleblower. She released a lot of internal company documents to the media and lawmakers. Those reports are showing that the company is not rectifying the issues that they are aware of (something which can harm mankind or ignite issues to grow up in a larger way), which created a bad impact on the company.

The newly known Meta is based on the fictional term metaverse, which was first used in the novel Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. In this novel, the scenario is like the world is entering into a dystopian condition where the government has transferred its power to private companies and is busy dealing with modern commodities and ideas as virtual reality, cryptocurrencies, etc.

Now, coming to the point that is it a worthy name indeed? So, what is metaverse? In a simple explanation we can consider metaverse as a virtual world that is running parallelly with us where users can appear in different identities, can have their possessions and different characteristics too. As previously mentioned, Stephenson’s got a huge fan base among Silicon Valley leaders. As per most Silicon Valley intellectuals, the metaverse is not only existed in a digital platform but also has its significance over the physical realm. Venture capitalist Matthew Ball has added that metaverse does not pause or end or reset, it just continues indefinitely.

“Today we are seen as a social media company, but in our DNA, we are a company that builds technology to connect people, and the metaverse is the next frontier just like social networking was when we got started,” newly known Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg added in this last conference. That clearly defines the unfathomable ambition of Zuckerberg that they are going to create a whole new era in this digital world of connectivity. In that announcement the company has also mentioned that it is going to change its stock ticker from FB to MVRS, which will be seen effective from the early week of December 2021.

The company has revamped its margin not only by introducing its social media platforms but also with a line of Portal video-calling devices, smart sunglasses (known as Project Nazare), virtual-reality headset (known as Project Cambria). The company’s clear indication is heading towards the moto that Virtual reality and augmented reality will be a key content of its body in the forthcoming years. They are minutely focusing on Interoperability to give a seamless experience to the users over their devices. Meta is also confident to spend about $10 billion by the next year to develop the technologies and support system to properly build the metaverse.

Zuckerberg has mentioned that the metaverse will let people hang out with people without being in the same space. Moreover, they are looking for making the time-spend more valuable for the users. He added, “You’ll be able to hang out with friends, work, play, learn, shop, create, and more. It’s not necessarily about spending more time online- it’s about making the time you do spend online more meaningful.” Foresighted company Meta also informed that the building and developing of metaverse will take a long period like 10-15 years, although it has started its journey in a full-fledged manner to achieve the goal at the earliest.

So, Meta is going to be the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, etc., and outstretch its barriers by launching a whole new experience to the world.
